The magnum opus and latest work from Svetlana Alexievich, the 2015 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature - a symphonic oral history about the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the emergence of a new Russia. When the Swedish Academy awarded Svetlana Alexievich the Nobel Prize, it cited her for inventing "a new kind of literary genre", describing her work as "a history of emotions - a history of the soul". Alexievich's distinctive documentary style, combining extended individual monologues with a collage of voices, records the stories of ordinary women and men who are rarely given the opportunity to speak, whose experiences are often lost in the official histories of the nation. In Secondhand Time, Alexievich chronicles the demise of communism. Everyday Russian citizens recount the past 30 years, showing us what life was like during the fall of the Soviet Union and what it's like to live in the new Russia left in its wake. Through interviews spanning from 1991 to 2012, Alexievich takes us behind the propaganda and contrived media accounts, giving us a panoramic portrait of contemporary Russia and Russians who still carry memories of oppression, terror, famine, massacres - but also of pride in their country, hope for the future, and a belief that everyone was working and fighting together to bring about a utopia. Here is an account of life in the aftermath of an idea so powerful it once dominated a third of the world. A magnificent tapestry of the sorrows and triumphs of the human spirit woven by a master, Secondhand Time tells the stories that together make up the true history of a nation. "Through the voices of those who confided in her," The Nation writes, "Alexievich tells us about human nature, about our dreams, our choices, about good and evil - in a word, about ourselves." 1. When Life Fu*ks You Over: How to Get Back on Tr...

It’s not a question of “if” life f--ks you over but it’s a question of “when”. Everything might be going great; you feel like you are on top of the world and suddenly you get a phone call from your biggest client telling you that they will terminate the contract. Or when you buy a secondhand car from a car dealer, and you are all excited to take it out for a spin, and it suddenly stops driving in the middle of a highway. Or the time when you are together with your girlfriend having a wonderful, romantic dinner, and you find out she has been cheating on you for two years now. Well, join the club. There is no way around it, your partner, politics, technologies, mechanics, your best friend, whatever it is...somebody or something will eventually let you down in life. But When Life Fu*ks You Over is not a book about feeling sorry for yourself and sending a meteor shower of empathy messages your way for all the hard times you went through. No, it’s a guide meant to help you get yourself out of that negative spiral, pick up the pieces, brush yourself off, and bounce back from a divorce, losing your job, injury, or whatever difficult situation you are in right now. The author uses his experience of getting regularly f--ked over to underline the attitude and actions you should take in order to tackle the challenges life throws at you. You will hear the ugly truth about yourself, and you will be confronted with change, but this book’s only purpose is to help you get back on track and live a life worth living - because you never know when it’s your last day. 1. Pope Clement VIII and Judaism
34,00 € *

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The relations between Pope Clement VIII and Judaism were rather bad, since Pope Clement had no qualms in making the usual link between Jews and usury. All the world suffers from the usury of the Jews, their monopolies and deceit. They have brought many unfortunate people into a state of poverty, especially the farmers, working class people and the very poor. Then as now Jews have to be reminded intermittently anew that they were enjoying rights in any country since they left Palestine and the Arabian desert, and subsequently their ethical and moral doctrines as well as their deeds rightly deserve to be exposed to criticism in whatever country they happen to live. Clement VIII''s approach towards the Jews had more specific targets. In Cum saepe accidere (February 28, 1592) he forbade the long-established Jewish community of the papal enclave of Avignon to sell new goods, putting them at a disadvantage and fostering the cliché of the Jew as a dealer in secondhand goods.
